European Wheelchair Basketball Championships

Between August 28 and September 6, the University of Worcester will host the continentís best wheelchair basketball teams as they fight it out for the title of European champions and a coveted spot at next yearís Rio Paralympic Games.

The menís and the womenís Championships will take place simultaneously at the award-winning University Arena, the first indoor sporting facility in the country designed specifically to meet the needs of the wheelchair athlete.

Reigning European champions Great Britain join the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Israel, the Netherlands, Turkey, Sweden and Switzerland in the menís tournament, which will see the top five nations qualify for Rio.

The best four womenís teams will also qualify for Brazil, with Great Britainís women looking to improve on the bronze they won in the last European Championships when they meet France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Turkey in Worcester.

Delivered by British Wheelchair Basketball in partnership with the University of Worcester and UK Sport, the European Championships are part of the latterís National Lottery funded major events programme, which targets championships that will support the nationís athletes in their preparation and qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

With 73 action-packed matches split over 33 sessions, the Championships represent an unique opportunity for our students and the people of Worcester and the wider region to watch top class sport and support the Great Britain teams as they embark on their road to Rio.
