What will you study?

Here is an overview of current modules available on this course. Regular updates may mean that exact module titles may differ.

Year 1

  • Introduction to Physical Education
    Consider what High Quality PE may look like and how you can implement good practice when teaching primary school pupils.
  • Scientific Principles of Movement in PE
    A multi-disciplinary approach to understanding the psychological, physiological and sociological factors that underpin the development of skill and movement in school aged children.
  • Dance & Gymnastics
    Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of gymnastics and dance in relation to the Physical Education National Curriculum in Primary schools.
  • Fundamentals of Athletics in Schools
    An introduction to teaching athletics to peers and school pupils, underpinned by scientific principles.

Year 2

  • Learning and Teaching in Physical Education
    A number of models of learning are focused on from a philosophical perspective and applied through the teaching of games.
  • The Research Process
    Develops research skills in sport and exercise.
  • School Based Learning
    Develop and apply your subject knowledge and teaching skills in a school.
  • Teaching Gymnastics and Dance in Secondary Schools
    Has a secondary school focus. Essentially a practically based module with an emphasis on improving performance through applied practice.
  • Swimming and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
    To understand risk assessment and how it is applied in schools in particular in association with activities which carry an element of risk or where the pupils could come to harm.    
  • Teaching Special Education Needs and Disability PE in Schools
    Provides an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of Special Education Needs and Disability in Physical Education.


Year 3

  • Independent Study (taken over two semesters)
    Independent Study (taken in one semester)
    These modules build on research methods developed over two years of study, by allowing students to research a topic of their choice, in depth. 
  • Application of Learning Theory in Physical Education
    Provides an opportunity for students to analyse and apply learning theories, approaches, styles, strategies, methods and processes to their own and others learning and performance in schools. 
  • Primary Physical Education
    Teaching, leading and managing PE in Primary Schools.
  • 14-19 PE and Sport
    The purpose of this module is to develop a critical understanding of the 14 – 19 curriculum.
  • Beyond the PE Curriculum-Participatory Action Research
    Provides an opportunity to reflect upon personal development in a sport or physical activity to further develop their knowledge and understanding. Action research will be used as a tool to analyse the provision of the chosen activity.

    Helen Hope

    Helen Hope is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education. Before joining the university she had taught in secondary schools for ten years and was Head of a PE department for five years. She has previously led the PGCE PE teacher training programme for three years before moving into teaching on the Undergraduate Modular Scheme course.

    Lerverne Barber

    Lerverne is Deputy Head and Principal Lecturer with responsibility for Learning, Teaching and Student Experience (including Recruitment, Retention and Achievement), within the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science (ISES). She is a member of the Senior Management Team in ISES and has been part of the Physical Education (PE) teaching team for more than ten years, having been PE Course Leader from 2008 - 2011.

    Rebecca Foster

    Rebecca has been teaching PE predominantly in the North of England for over 20 years. She was Head of PE of one of the first six Sports Colleges in the Country. After 7 years of teaching she backpacked the World and did some temporary teaching in Australia and South Africa. She now currently volunteers as Team Manager for UK Deaf Athletics and is currently the course leader for Physical Education and Senior Lecturer for Adaptive PE.

    Vanessa Jones

    Vanessa Jones is an Associate Head  and member of the Senior Management Team for the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science.

    She is also currently engaged in writing chapters for the fifth edition of A Practical Guide to Teaching Physical Education in the Secondary School and the 6th edition Learning to teach Physical Education in the Secondary School: a practical companion.

    Rachael Bullingham

    Rachael is a lecturer in Physical Education at the University of Worcester. She previously taught Physical Education in a secondary school, as well as performing various pastoral roles.

    In addition to teaching she has been involved in research and has recently published on the topic of homophobia in sport. Rachael is currently studying for a PhD analysing the experiences of openly lesbian athletes participating in team sports.

  • Charlotte a lecturer in Physical Education

    Charlotte Beaman-Evans

    Charlotte is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and the Sports Scholarship Coordinator at the University of Worcester. Before joining the University, she was previously a teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school. A keen sports player Charlotte has played a range of sports including rugby, football and hockey, achieving international status in Rugby.

How will you be taught?

Teaching approach

During the PE course, you will be taught by an experienced and enthusiastic team of physical education practitioners who are committed to providing a quality experience that will enable you to become an effective and employable graduate.

You will gain valuable experience on placements and have the opportunity of working in both primary and secondary school settings.


A wide range of assessment methods are used which include:

  • Presentations (single, paired, group)
  • Essay
  • Teaching episodes
  • Exams
  • Work placement logs
  • Task cards

These reflect the nature of the content and context of the module.

Key/transferable skills are an aspect of all module assessment methods.


Where could it take you?


Due to the flexible nature of the course, students are able to develop specific areas of interest, experience new areas of study and build on their strengths whilst addressing areas of weakness in order that they achieve their full potential. Tutors are able to give students individualised advice on career pathways.

The PE degree course provides a sound basis for taking a PGCE teaching qualification. Students wishing to pursue a career in teaching should ensure they take the full range of PE modules available (secondary) and think carefully about options outside the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science if they wish to pursue primary.

Previous graduates have found employment in a variety of areas, including teaching, School sport premium initiatives, lecturing, the armed forces, public services, coaching, sports development managers, health promotion/ corporate fitness, sales, NHS activity co-ordinatiors, leisure and recreation management, personal fitness training, sports information analyst, performance analyst, sports marketing and events management.

PE graduates are also able to follow a variety of pathways into postgraduate level study including Masters degrees and PhD studies.

The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in 2017 will be £9,250.

We have over 1,000 rooms across our halls, 358 of which were new in 2009. We offer halls of residence to suit every budget and need, from our 'Traditional Hall' at £94 per week to the £153 per week 'En-suite Extra'.
