This undergraduate level 6 module aims to develop your underpinning knowledge and skills to prepare you to study nutrition or nutritional therapy at Master’s level if your HE qualification does not meet our entry requirements.
It is also suitable for healthcare professionals who want to study nutrition and its application to their current practice.
The module will allow you to develop your knowledge of nutrients and their effects on human physiology and cell biochemistry. You will also learn about current dietary guidelines and the implications of selected dietary changes to health.

Successful completion of a University undergraduate degree or diploma.
If your previous undergraduate study was not delivered and assessed in English, you will need to have achieved IELTS at 6.0 or above, with a minimum of 5.5 in each area before being admitted onto the module. Other English language qualifications will be considered.

- Dietary guidelines and the nutritional health of populations.
- Human anatomy and homeostasis. Functions of the digestive, cardiovascular and endocrine systems.
- Cell structure and organelles.
- Food safety.
- Macronutrient structure and bioavailability.
- Satiety, satiation, energy density and energy balance.
- Metabolic pathways and the effect of diet on metabolism.
- Diet and cardiovascular health, bone health, eye health, and cancer.
- Referencing and academic skills; summarising, critique, synthesizing.
Teaching and Assessment
The module is delivered using an intensive blended learning approach. This involves attending University for 5 study days from 10.15-17.15 with directed study and tutorial support in between the lecture days. The study days will involve key lectures, quizzes, group work and discussion. The module will make use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to support learning through the provision of online lectures, lecture notes, guided reading, video clips and discussion forums.
The module is assessed by a patchwork text assessment. Four separate pieces of writing on different aspects of the module content are submitted during the course. Feedback on academic skills and content is given on each of these pieces which can then be edited and re- submitted as the final assignment.
This module may be used to access the MSc/PGDip Nutritional Therapy programmes or the MSc/PgDip Diet, Nutrition and Health programmes. Passing this module at an appropriate level may be set as an additional entry requirement for the postgraduate Nutrition Therapy or Diet, Nutrition and Health programmes.
Alternatively, the module can be taken on a stand-alone basis as part of the Professional Development for Health Sciences (CPD) programme or as an option module in the BSc Health Sciences.

What are the hours and lecture times?
The module equates to 200 hours of study with approx 36-40 hours attendance on campus - the rest being work you do at home with support of our Virtual Learning environment (Blackboard). Module blocks normally run on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
How long does the course take to complete?
The course takes five days.

• Students wishing to access the programme must normally hold a first degree, undergraduate diploma, or equivalent.
• IELTS at 7 is required for students for whom English is not their first language
