Funding for Nursing courses is changing. There will no longer be an NHS bursary from September 2017. After this date, students will be required to take out student loans to fund their course. See the costs section below for more information.

What qualifications will you need?
UCAS tariff points
Candidates applying for BSc (Hons) Nursing, Adult, Mental Health or Children's field of practice will need to demonstrate the following entry requirements:

BSc (Hons) Nursing – Adult, Child and Mental Health fields of practice
- 104 or above new UCAS Tariff points from 3 full ‘A’ levels
- BTEC Extended Diploma DMM or above
- Access Diploma, full award of 60 credits; 45 credits at level 3, 30 credits must be achieved at merit or distinction
(WE DO NOT ACCEPT NVQ’S AT LEVEL 2 OR LEVEL 3)
- Evidence of recent academic study (within 5 years)
- 5 GCSE’s grade C/4 or above to include Maths and English Language (or an acceptable equivalent listed below)
Pass in one of the following acceptable Maths qualifications:
- GCSE Maths grade C/4 or above
- Functional Skills Mathematics (Functional Skills in Numeracy is not accepted)
- Essential Skills (Wales) Maths
- NARIC approved GCSE equivalent International qualification
- University of Worcester Alternative Test in Mathematics
Pass in one of the following acceptable English Language qualifications:
- GCSE English Language grade C/4 or above
- Academic IELTS 7.0 with a score of at least 7.0 in each component (if English is not your first language)
- NARIC approved GCSE equivalent International qualification
- University of Worcester Alternative Test in English

From 1 August 2017 new students in England on nursing courses will have access to a support package of tuition fee loans and support for living costs, rather than getting an NHS grant. See more funding information.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a selection event, and will be expected to demonstrate that they have an understanding of the requirements of nursing. NHS regulations require student nurses to obtain a satisfactory health clearance and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
As part of the selection event, applicants will be asked to complete a maths test, an example of which can be downloaded here.
The University will consider each application on its individual merits and will recognise a range of qualifications not currently included in the Tariff, including Access courses, European Baccalaureate. If you do not meet the minimum entry requirements outlined above, please contact the Admissions Office for advice.

What will you study?
There are three distinct Nursing courses, each allowing you to specialise in a specific field of practice.
Fields of practice
Adult nursing - B740
The adult nursing field of practice modules focus on the needs of adults with a diverse range of health and dependency needs, including physical and emotional care requirements, particularly addressing the needs of the ageing population. Adult field of practice nurses will be articulate, flexible, decision makers able to promote health and well-being, prioritise effective care and implement evidence-based nursing practice. They will work collaboratively with the inter-professional team, service users and their families, respecting their rights, choices and wishes. The emphasis is on providing a high quality experience for all service users, in a wide range of healthcare settings.
Children’s nursing - B730
Meeting the specific needs of children, young people and their families is at the core of children’s nursing. The programme aims to produce safe and responsive practitioners who can work effectively across traditional boundaries in a collaborative way, providing high quality child and family centred care that meets the demands of integrated child health and social care provision. Future children’s nurses need to be able to empower each child and their family to receive individualised care, enabling each child to reach their full potential.
Mental health nursing - B760
The mental health nursing field of practice recognises the inclusion of service users and carers as an integral part of the delivery of the programme. This will ensure that person-centred recovery processes are addressed throughout the programme in the development of the student. The mental health field of practice modules will be further informed by critical engagement with current mental health agendas and developments.

Teaching and Assessment
How will you be taught?
Both on placement and at University, you should expect to work a 37.5 hour week, 45 weeks of the year. This can include antisocial hours and bank holidays, following the usual practice for the nursing profession
Holiday periods are fixed throughout the whole three years. Over the nursing year, 7 weeks of annual leave are incorporated into the timetable, which includes bank holidays

Fifty per cent of the programme takes place in the practice setting where you will experience a range of challenging and exciting placements.
Adult placements include: medical and surgical areas, critical care settings, individuals’ homes, and older people’s services and primary care.
Mental Health placements include: the acute setting, caring for older people, individuals recovering from mental health problems, community services and specialist placements including substance misuse, child and adolescent mental health services.
Child Health placements include: the acute setting, experience with school nurses and health visitors, the Community Children’s Nursing Team, caring for new-born babies and children with learning and physical disabilities.
Placements will be within Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. However, in the final year of the programme you will have the opportunity to go overseas or to a specialist placement within the UK. Additional funding may be available for placements within the European Union.
On Clinical Placements, as well as your Unit/Module and Academic Tutors, you will be supported by a Mentor and an Assessor. Although you are supernumery to the Clinical Placement staff, whilst in the Placement you will follow the same working patterns as qualified staff, including shifts and anti-social hours. This enables your Mentor and the person who assesses your work to provide continuous supervision, teaching and support.
We are committed to providing student centred leaning and are keen to produce new learning experiences for our students that will help them to develop into self directed learners and effective and efficient professionals. In order to support these aims we provide a range of assessment forms which include, Continuous assessment of practice, Coursework, Written Assignments, Web-based assignments, Seminar presentations, Examinations and Vivas. Honours degree students also complete a dissertation as their final written assessment.
Where could it take you?
On completing the course you will have the opportunity to work as a registered nurse in a variety of settings and specialities, like those mentioned above, in the UK and overseas. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to advance your academic study.
Despite facing a life-threatening condition during her studies, Amy graduated with a degree in Adult Nursing in 2016.
In August 2014, at the end of her second year of studies, Amy was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a genetic autoimmune disease where the body’s anti-bodies attack the liver.
With no cure, doctors told Amy she needed a liver transplant and she went on the organ donation waiting list.
Despite this, she continued with her studies and placement on a busy ward, with support from University lecturers and nursing staff.
After three weeks on the list, in January 2015, Amy had her liver transplant and after six months returned to University.
However, in her final placement week a devastated Amy had to defer her studies again after falling ill.
Facing surgery to remove her large intestine, this was avoided by alternative treatment that allowed Amy to recover and eventually return to complete her degree this year.
Amy gained a 2:2 in her Adult Nursing degree and has now fulfilled her ambition of working as a Staff Nurse at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
“My experience has already helped and will help me in my nursing career,” said Amy. “Through my experience, I have gained a greater experience of being a patient. I now know what it’s like to be that patient in the bed who has no idea what is going on, how it feels to be that patient who is scared and frightened of the unknown.
“I feel my experience has made me the best nurse I can possibly be. I am more compassionate, more understanding and always providing patient-centred care.”

How much will it cost?
Tuition fees are funded for all full-time students studying Nursing or Midwifery on NHS supported places in the February 2017 cohort.
The standard tuition fee for full-time UK and EU students registering in the September 2017 cohort will be no more than £9,250, subject to approval by Parliament.

Funding for student nurses
From 1 August 2017 new students in England on nursing courses will have access to a support package of tuition fee loans and support for living costs, rather than getting an NHS grant. Information on these changes can be found on a new website produced by the Council of Deans of Health.
For the September 2017 and February 2018 intakes we will provide initial uniforms (3 tunics, 2 trousers & epaulettes). We will also cover the costs of an Enhanced DBS check, an Occupational Health screening and vaccinations.
Every course has day-to-day costs for essential books, stationery, printing and photocopying.
As part of the course you will need to travel to placements and will therefore need to pay any associated costs. You may be able to reclaim these travel expenses depending on your individual circumstances.
Finding the right accommodation is paramount to your university experience, and our welcoming student communities are great places to live and study.
We have over 1,000 rooms across our halls, 358 of which were new in 2009. We offer halls of residence to suit every budget and need, from our 'Traditional Hall' at £94 per week to the £153 per week 'En-suite Extra'.

The Disability Rights Commission (2007) identify that applicants to higher education have a statutory duty to disclose information about disabilities or long-term health conditions for entry to nursing courses across Britain. Although the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) says that “you may not be fit to practice for reasons of conduct, health or competence” (NMC 2008) it’s not straight forward and we would not want you to be deterred from applying.
If you have a disability, physical or mental health problem the above legislation and professional guidelines do not prevent you from applying to this University to undertake Nurse/ Midwifery training. In accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 reasonable adjustments can be considered and put in place, as appropriate, to support and enable you to undertake your studies effectively.
