Teaching and Assessment

How will you be taught?

Teaching approach

Year one starts from your own experience of education and builds on that as you explore and analyse current policies and practices. The history of the development of modern education is also explored, as is the practice of the area in a variety of global contexts. Psychological aspects of education, the use of e media, and issues of equality, amongst other themes, are also investigated.

In year two you will explore how to research education as well as making choices from a wide variety of modules including psychology and education, special and inclusive education, IT and education. Work experience modules can be taken in year two and year three giving you the chance to show that you have had recent experience in an educational setting should you wish to apply for PGCE programmes.

In year three you are supported to take an extended individual study in an area of your interest in education, as well as further modules of your choice, such as organising teaching and learning, management in education, and issues around special education and disability. You can take a pathway throughout the three years that relates to themes of special and inclusive education and another that enables you to gain a highly useful qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Here are a few of the current members of the department who teach on this course:

    Ellie Hill

    Ellie joined the Institute of Education at Worcester in 2013 and is currently the Course Leader for BA Education Studies and her work at the University of Worcester involves lecturing within Education Studies, MA in Religion and Values and Initial Teacher Training (ITE). The overview of different degrees is immensely interesting and one informs the other when preparing to work with students. In her on-going work, Ellie is currently contributing to a book on Inclusive Education with her colleagues in the Centre for Education and Inclusion at University of Worcester. In addition, her work with REQM (RE Quality Mark) involves supervising teachers in post as they undertake action research in their subject area.

    Gareth Dart

    Gareth joined the University of Worcester in 2007 and currently teaches on various modules on the Education Studies degree and on other courses. He has specific interests in teacher education and special and inclusive education in the contexts of resource poor countries, particularly southern Africa. Gareth is the Phase Leader for Year 2 students.

    Dr Philip Woodward

    Philip joined the Institute of Education at Worcester in 2015, as a Senior Lecturer in Education Studies. He brings extensive experience from both further and higher education. In the higher education sector, Philip spent twelve years as an Associate Lecturer for The Open University working on a range of multidisciplinary social science courses. He has also contributed to the University of Greenwich Initial Teacher Education programme as an Associate Lecturer.  Philip is the Phase Leader for Year 1 students.

    Marie Stephenson

    Marie joins the Centre for Inclusion & Education and brings with her extensive teaching experience from both the Post-Compulsory (FE) sectors and more recently higher education settings - here and in the USA. A career spanning over 17 years has seen Marie teach in a variety of educational contexts and she is currently a final year PhD student, completing in 2016-2017 at the University of Worcester.


Where could it take you?


The Education Studies degree is an excellent route for progression to PGCE courses at Worcester and other providers. If you achieve a 2:1 or above you will be guaranteed an interview for teacher training (Primary) at Worcester provided you meet the various national pre-requisites for the course .

As well as going on to become successful teachers other students have moved into areas of learning support, child mentoring and welfare, and become training officers in the private sector. The opportunity to take a TEFL qualification as part of the degree opens a world of employment opportunities.

    Case study

    Tom Hale

    Tom spent several years after sixth form travelling and living abroad, but it was his time on the Education Studies undergraduate degree course at the University of Worcester that helped crystallise what he wanted for his future.

    “I have always been interested in helping people or giving advice to people,” said Tom. “The course was brilliant and touched on lots of different things; the historical aspects of education along with very up to date content.  I thought the tutors were brilliant and offered lots of support and information.

    “I think my experience at University has changed me as a person; it’s made me realise a few things about the world and it’s helped me know where I want to go in my career.”

    Tom is now working at Perrywood Primary School as a teaching assistant, and is training through the school to become a qualified teacher.

    He is also doing a Master’s degree in education part-time at the University of Worcester.

Every course has day-to-day costs for basic books, stationery, printing and photocopying.  The amounts vary between courses.


Finding the right accommodation is paramount to your university experience, and our welcoming student communities are great places to live and study.

We have over 1,000 rooms across our halls, 358 of which were new in 2009. We offer halls of residence to suit every budget and need, from our 'Traditional Hall' at £94 per week to the £153 per week 'En-suite Extra'.
