Come and gain your Diploma in Teaching English (Literacy and ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Newly-revalidated and re-designed, the Diploma was launched in September 2015. It †is a one-year part-time programme taught at our†St Johnís and City Campuses by experienced tutors of the Centre for Secondary and Post-Compulsory Education who are subject specialists with recently published research.
The course is for new or experienced teachers who wish to develop their English teaching skills and acquire a subject specific qualification. The course design is up to date, relevant and practical.
As a teacher undertaking the programme you will develop skills, knowledge and critical understanding of learning and teaching issues in the FE and Skills sector. You will apply these qualities to your own professional practice and demonstrate effective learning and teaching in your own subject specialism.
The Diploma leads to a nationally recognised qualification in teaching Literacy and ESOL in the further education and skills sector and is highly valued by employers. It is also essential for QTLS as a subject specific teacher of English (Literacy and ESOL).

Evidence of an initial teacher training qualification.† This Diploma can be studied at the same time as a general teaching qualification.
A†Level/Level 3 or above in English. If you do not have this then an equivalent University of Worcester assessment can be arranged.
GCSE English Language at Grade C or Level 2 Functional Skills in English.
The following Employer confirmations must be supplied for this course:
- DBS clearance
- Access to a subject specialist mentor
- Access to a minimum of 70 teaching hours (preferably at two different levels)
The course fees are £2,300.
You may be entitled to a loan to cover course fees which you will only pay back once you are earning a certain amount of money

The course offers a wide range of delivery and learning methods including:
- Lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, blended learning and peer learning/shadowing of good teaching practice, research, reading, peer observation, mentoring and blended learning†
- Learning opportunities are both tutor and learner led
- Partnership wide events, for example, the Teaching and Learning Conference
Coursework, including: written assignments; portfolio evidence of planning, evaluation and reflection; presentations; research reports; analysis of links between theory and practice and observation of teaching.
The course has very high success rates (97%) and employability rates are excellent with significant numbers of trainees who move from part-time to full-time employment and full-time tutors who move into further career opportunities.
The course gives 60 credits at Level 5. There is also possible progression to Masters Level programmes for those who have a degree.
