Vacation Teaching Development Assistantship - Developing a Digital Platform for Employability Skills - Open to University of Worcester students only (see * below for specific eligibility criteria)

This project will explore innovation in student services and develop a new approach to delivering employability for students in WBS through the use of digital technology.

*Open to University of Worcester Students only - eligible students are:

• students completing the penultimate or final year of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree (or equivalent) at the University of Worcester or partner institutions


• students completing, or who have completed, an undergraduate degree at another university (with 1st or 2:1 predicted/achieved) who are about to commence postgraduate studies at the University of Worcester.

This proposal is rooted in the University of Worcester’s mission to help students acquire high level employability skills, to find graduate employment and develop their job seeking skills (UW Strategic Plan, 2013-2018).

Employers are increasingly expecting students to possess practical and transferable skills (APM, 2016). However, in our experience whilst students appreciate the academic skills needed for improved grades they are not as aware of employability skills.

Informed by our previous research on key employability skills for business and management students and the outputs from the ‘Use My Ability’ project that focused on the employability and disabled students, this VTDA aims to formally explore, select and develop a suitable digital platform to raise student awareness of key employability skills and direct their ongoing development. The digital platform will articulate each highly sought employability skill, and provide a space where students can evidence these with examples from activities undertaken prior, during and/or alongside their undergraduate course. It will be both a diagnostic and development tool, by benchmarking the current status of the students with the most demanded graduate market skills and then suggesting learning roadmaps to further employability skills development.

From a UW perspective it will demonstrate a sustainable and measurable impact on the awareness and development of employability skills at undergraduate course level and deliver additional value to the students alongside their undergraduate curriculum to enable them to access the current graduate labour market.

The team positions this project as on-going development from the ‘Use My Ability’ project and envisages building on the expertise developed by UW and other partners to widening the impact to other students.


This project will enable you to develop professionally and academically. You will learn about and develop your own employability skills in communication, self-management and time management, whilst developing specific skills in digital technologies. Your academic work will also benefit from more highly developed skills in critical thinking and problem solving.

Selection Process:

Student applications will be considered by a Panel consisting of the project supervisor and one other member of staff trained in interviewing processes. The Panel will draw up a shortlist and a selection process will be undertaken.

The VTDA Scheme is modelled on the highly successful Vacation Research Assistantship Scheme, and will provide students or recent graduates with experience of collaborating on an educational development project over the summer vacation, enabling them to gain valuable work experience and contribute to the development of teaching and learning materials. The scheme will provide UW staff with support in developing or re-developing learning materials relating to a module or part of a course, with a particular focus on embedding learning technologies to establish a ‘blended’ learning approach.

Students appointed to an Assistantship can be expected to engage with a variety of tasks, which may include web-based research, design and development/adaptation of materials and resources, piloting and testing of materials, using technologies, administrative support including data collation and presentation, editing, proof-reading, interviewing etc.

On completion of the project, the supervisor and student must complete a report providing the following information:

• objectives set and met 

• methods and approaches to development work employed

• outputs

• benefits to the student including training undertaken, skills developed, etc.

• potential impact on student learning experience.

With the help of the supervisors to:

1. Evaluate the ‘Use My Ability’ digital platform and use to inform the development an appropriate technology based platform to support wider student needs.

2. Review the ‘Use My Ability’ definitions of employability skills and consolidate for use within WBS.

3. Develop potential scenarios of how students can evidence their existing skills. 

4. Develop possible learning roadmaps to facilitate the development of students’ employability skills.

*Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

*Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety and well being and that of other staff and students.
