Sessional Lecturers in Law

The University of Worcester is seeking sessional law lecturers to join its newly established School of Law.

We aim to ensure that our law students are offered an outstanding student experience, and the successful applicants will be able to demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that s/he is able to contribute to this aspiration in a very practical and flexible way.

The successful applicant will form part of a small, enthusiastic and motivated team delivering the LLB.

S/he will also be expected to contribute to the teaching of one or more of the following subjects:

• Criminal Law

• Law of Torts

• Land Law

• Media Law.

NB. If you are successful at interview you will be invited to join a pool of sessional lecturers and we will contact you if suitable work becomes available, which may be immediate. We are not able to guarantee employment as this will be subject to student numbers. The number of hours available may only be a few hours per week. Selection Methods:

Short-listed candidates will be invited to a panel interview. Candidates will also be required to deliver a 15 minute teaching session on a topic of their choice to 2nd Year LLB students. Further details will be provided to shortlisted candidates.

Worcester is a beautiful cathedral and University City situated in the heart of England on the banks of the River Severn. Main duties

Main duties

1. To prepare for teaching by developing an understanding of the content, learning outcomes and modes of delivery for the relevant sessions. This may include undertaking relevant reading and research to inform teaching content and pedagogical and curriculum developments.

2. To prepare course materials, reading lists and course outlines and handouts, and ensure that this information is available to students in advance of the course and taught sessions.

3. To teach the sessions in a variety of settings as appropriate; for example, small group tutorials, lectures, seminars, workshops or other appropriate method.

4. To set and mark assignments and provide formative and summative feedback to students.

5. To contribute to the design of appropriate assessments, ensuring that assessments are fair, well managed and focused on assessment for learning.

6. To seek ways of improving performance by reflecting on teaching design and delivery and obtaining and analysing feedback.

7. To make effective and innovative use of learning technologies including the University’s Virtual Learning Environment to support student learning.

8. To attend staff development events and activities as appropriate, including induction activities (for which financial support is available).

9. To significantly contribute to and deliver an outstanding learning experience for Law students, through inspirational teaching.

10. To undertake high quality teaching on the LLB, including teaching in one or more of the following areas: Criminal Law, Land Law, Law of Torts or Media Law.

11. To contribute to the promotion, growth and reputation of the University as an outstanding place at which to be a student.

12. To undertake other administrative duties related to teaching.

13. Other duties as agreed with the Head of Law.

Please provide evidence of how you meet each of the essential criteria.

Essential Criteria

1. An undergraduate degree in law (or the Graduate Diploma in Law).

2. A postgraduate qualification in law or in legal practice.

3. Evidence of a student centred approach and a commitment to student satisfaction.

4. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team.

5. ICT competence for teaching purposes and associated course administration.

6. Experience of teaching within Higher Education or relevant legal professional experience.

7. A commitment to, and experience of using interactive teaching methods with a learner centred focus.

8. Ability to organise and deploy time effectively.

Desirable Criteria

1. A current legal practising certificate, allowing you to practice law in the UK.

2. Experience of teaching on a qualifying law degree in Higher Education, including experience of teaching at least one of the foundations of legal knowledge subjects.

3. A PhD in Law.

4. Teaching qualification or HEA Fellowship.

5. Experience of using a Virtual Learning Environment.
