*Open to University of Worcester Students only - eligible students are:

• students completing the penultimate or final year of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree (or equivalent) at the University of Worcester or partner institutions


• students completing, or who have completed, an undergraduate degree at another university (with 1st or 2:1 predicted/achieved) who are about to commence postgraduate studies at the University of Worcester.


To improve access to academic material, through the delivery of flipped learning and development of information exchange strategies.

There has been an increase in demand for access to digital media and interactive forums to support and enhance the student learning experience both in and outside of the classroom. Although the academic team is increasingly incorporating digitally enhanced teaching, the development of relevant and appropriate material has been limited due to time constraints and lack of technological capacity. Thus, technology enhanced learning (TEL) techniques are not applied consistently across the FD modules. The VTDA will enable the team to operationalise a consistent digital template across the FD programmes.

The VTDA programme last year, enabled TEL to be implemented for one module. Student feedback about these sessions has been positive and a request for more of these sessions has been made. In order to do this, the team requires the assistance of an individual to apply consistent model and format to the digital learning material. The Vacation Teaching Development Assistant (VTDA) will be expected to support the conversion of various digitally held material, into e-learning format. The existing material is largely presented in power point and will require accurate an innovative and creative individual to convert it to an e-learning format. For example, converting PowerPoint into e-learning media tools such as Camtasia, Prezi. The material will be drawn from foundation degree courses that will include health and social care, dementia studies and mental health course provision.


Develop existing material into interactive digital formats that can be posted onto Black Board, including:

1. Production of quizzes for each lecture

2. Post Padlet for students to pose questions or make suggestions

3. Create talking heads about the module and assessment information

4. Construct Polls and surveys on the values exchange to encourage students to engage in active research relevant to each lecture

5. Produce short how to guides e.g. how to access to the e-learning

6. Convert lecture information into further online/e-learning packages e.g. prezi.

Selection Methods:

Student applications will be considered by a Panel consisting of the project supervisor and one other member of staff trained in interviewing processes. The Panel will draw up a shortlist and a selection process will be undertaken.

The VTDA Scheme is modelled on the highly successful Vacation Research Assistantship Scheme, and will provide students or recent graduates with experience of collaborating on an educational development project over the summer vacation, enabling them to gain valuable work experience and contribute to the development of teaching and learning materials. The scheme will provide UW staff with support in developing or re-developing learning materials relating to a module or part of a course, with a particular focus on embedding learning technologies to establish a ‘blended’ learning approach.

Students appointed to an Assistantship can be expected to engage with a variety of tasks, which may include web-based research, design and development/adaptation of materials and resources, piloting and testing of materials, using technologies, administrative support including data collation and presentation, editing, proof-reading, interviewing etc.

On completion of the project, the supervisor and student must complete a report providing the following information:

• objectives set and met

• methods and approaches to development work employed

• outputs 

• benefits to the student including training undertaken, skills developed, etc.    

• potential impact on student learning experience

4. To be available for regular meetings held with academic staff; however, much of the work can be completed remotely.

Essential Criteria 

1. Must be a student completing the penultimate or final year of an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) at the University of Worcester or partner institutions; or is about to commence postgraduate studies at the University of Worcester. 

2. Applicant must have extensive experience using IT software and hardware, within an academic virtual learning environment e.g. Blackboard, Moodle. 

3. Systematic, methodical and organised approach to work. 

4. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

5. Good understanding of the stages involved in the research process including analytical skills. 

6. Commitment to high quality research with demonstrable evidence of academic excellence in a relevant aspect of their studies. 

7. Good interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate confidently and clearly to a wide range of people, both orally and in writing. 

8. Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines. 

Desirable Criteria 

1. Level 6 independent study in an area cognate with social sciences, computer science. 

2. Good report writing skills. 

3. A track record of high quality academic writing. 

4. Experience of qualitative and/or quantitative research.
