Football Outreach Sports Coach (2 positions) - Open to current University of Worcester students only

The business of sport at University of Worcester goes from strength to strength, the prime purpose being to contribute to the quality of the student experience via support for academic and extracurricular programmes in a range of sport and exercise related courses, placements, employment and volunteering opportunities.

The current role is to support with the delivery of activity for clients of externally funded community sport outreach programmes, which has come about as part of our FA football development plan and BUCS Hubs programme in line with objectives to engage children and young people on an outreach basis within local schools to then feed back in to University facilities and local partner community clubs or existing player pathways within UoW, creating prospects for current student cohort engagement and potential recruitment opportunities in the future.

In doing so you must meet the necessary statutory health & safety legislation and internal quality standards. In addition you will, on occasion, be expected to support the Sport Facilities Management team to ensure the smooth running of the other University of Worcester (UW) sport and recreation services where appropriate.

All coaches will be expected to sign and adhere to the coaches code of conduct as part of the post.

This post will provide good practical coaching and industry based knowledge as an asset for your CV.

Background

Background

The Institute of Sports and Exercise Science currently has a full time academic staff of 50. In addition 15 staff from partner institutions participate in course delivery through ‘partnership agreements’ on HND/FD courses. The Institute is responsible for the work of the Sports Centre which currently employs 7 staff and the Motion and Performance Centre which employs a further 5 staff. The Institute is supported by a team of administrative staff and two sports and exercise science technicians. There are currently 4 full-time externally funded post graduate MPhil/PhD students.
The Institute has an impressive portfolio of courses including HNDs in Sports Studies, Sport Coaching and, Sports Performance and Coaching in partnership with Worcester College of Technology, Stourbridge College and Telford College of Art and Technology. The undergraduate programme includes: BSc Sports Studies, BSc Sport and Exercise Science, BSc Sports Coaching Science, BSc Coaching Science and Disability Sport, BSc Physical Education (non-QTS), BSc Outdoor Adventure Leadership and Management, BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Psychology; BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy. There is further course provision at the post graduate level including PGCE in secondary Physical Education, MSc in Sports Coaching Science and MSc Sports Business Management, MSc European Basketball Coaching Science and MSc Applied Sports Science.

There is a clear and distinct emphasis on the student experience and the Institute is proud of its reputation for high quality teaching and learning. The Institute has a creative culture and is constantly seeking to strengthen its portfolio of courses particularly, the development of a taught Masters Degree involving international partners.

There has been a strategic commitment by the University of Worcester over the past ten years to create unique, innovative ‘Learning Through Sport’ initiatives that have inspired, included and enthused thousands of children and young adults nationally and internationally.

The sports facilities include: the newly constructed University of Worcester Arena, 6 court sports centre, fitness centre, McClelland Wellbeing Centre, 3G astro turf, sand filled astro turf, gymnasia and significant off campus grass playing fields. Indoor academic facilities include exercise physiology laboratories (BASES accredited), two performance analysis laboratory, sports psychology and biomechanics laboratory. The world-class Motion and Performance Centre is an integral part of the University and supports teaching and learning, research and consultancy work.

The refurbished Riverside building that opened in September 2011 offers two large teaching spaces with multi-purpose sprung floors for indoor mini – games and dance, further smaller teaching rooms and a sports analysis teaching room with views to the two larger teaching spaces. A social learning internet café space is also available within this attractive venue.

The University has recently opened a major, 2000 seating capacity, 3 basketball court sports arena. The design of this facility includes purpose designed facilities for wheelchair athletes and mobility impaired athletes more generally
The Institute has extensive international links in Europe, New Zealand, China and USA and opportunities exist for international staff exchanges and research. Staff are supported in individual and group research projects, particularly where research informs teaching. There is a clear research and consultancy strategy over the next five years linked to its strategic aims and staff are organised into research interest groups.

The Institute hosts a range of national and regional facilities including: the County Sports Partnership and the Association for Physical Education (afPE). There is extensive collaboration with the Specialist Sports Colleges, local clubs and elite level sport such as Worcestershire County Cricket Club, Worcester Hockey Club, Worcester Warriors Rugby Club and Worcester Wolves Basketball Club through its sports scholarship programme.

 

Main duties

1. To coach and support clients involved with sport outreach programmes in to the local community.

2. To co-ordinate with the Football Development Officer (FDO) in the organisation, planning and delivery of coaching and football based provision and opportunities to specified groups and University students where directed.

3. To work within all outreach programmes occurring under guidance of the Outdoor Sport and Activity Manager.

4. To contribute and engage within the FAs Respect Programme.

5. To undertake the duties of the post in ways that ensures and enhances the health, safety and wellbeing of students and staff and to promote inclusion and diversity for all sections of the community. To work within and help to enhance the University’s commitment to environmentally sustainable ways of working.

6. To undertake any other duties as required by the FDO or Outdoor Activity and Sport Manager to commensurate with the scale of the post.

 

Main Aims

       
1. Growth & Retention. Increase & maintain participation in football (the number of affiliated teams), with a focus on mixed, youth, adult, small sided and disability.

2. Raising Standards. Support club and league development, particularly through the School-Club Links programme and the FA Charter Standard Scheme.

3. Better Players. Ensure programmes are provided to improve the standard of players and coaches across the county.

4. Running the Game. Work with local football partners, contributing towards administration and strategic planning.

5. Workforce Development. Increase and support the local football workforce via in-service training events.

6. Marketing & Promotion. Positively promote football programmes at the University of Worcester via various media methods. (as directed)

Essential Criteria

1. Level 2 Coaching Certificate in given sport or equivalent, or evidence of working towards completion of Level 2 Coaching Certificate. Valid first Aid qualification and DBS. Including registration with NGB for insurance purposes.

2. Applied experience and a proven track record as a coaching practitioner working with children, young people and adults in given sport and evidence of providing a positive role model for the participants you have worked with.

3. An understanding of student sport in schools and universities. (Including BUCS)

4. High quality organisation skills and able to work under own initiative.

5. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people both orally and in writing.

6. Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team and individually.

7. Possess a high level of computer literacy, with the ability to use a variety of, predominantly Microsoft packages and software to a good standard.

8. Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy and sensitivity. 

 

Desirable Criteria

1. An understanding of football structures and pathways is required

2. Passionate about and committed to the development of grass roots football in Worcestershire

3. Knowledge and understanding of the National Game Strategy

4. Knowledge and experience of officiating football programmes
